Right now, I’m a couple of weeks out from my first triathlon of 2015. My training plan has me doing 11 hours of exercise this week with 12 on tap for next. Because I just did the Splash and Dash, my training today felt sloooow and exhaustive. I wondered if I shouldn’t just call it a rest day as that seems to be what my body really needs but I have a busy weekend with various social and volunteer engagements and won’t have time to do any extended training later on.
My plan calls for 113 minutes of biking and 70 minutes of swimming today. As my pool is only open for an hour mid-day, I biked to another pool further away. The pool usually has the lap swimmers swim in a 25m pool but today we were in the larger, 50m pool. When this has happened in the past, I’m usually pretty excited as it makes it feel fresh. Not today though. My 70 minutes in the pool seemed to last forever. I don’t think 30 laps in a 50m pool have ever felt so long. I wanted to be done after about 7 laps. After wondering if I had the energy to do 23 more laps, I got out, consumed a gel*, and got back in the water. Only 23 more laps to go… When I did (finally) finish, I still had to climb back on the bike and ride an hour home. Swimming 2000m is pretty doable but 3000m felt exhausting.
For this weekend, I have a longer run scheduled and that should complete my 11+ hour week!
*I started keeping gels and energy bars in my pool bag because I’d feel faint and light headed after finishing my swims.
